The Arava is the sandy plain of the southern Negev Desert in Israel, where I lived for three years as a founding member of Kibbutz Lotan. Welding and agriculture go hand in hand, and I did a lot of both. The vivid images that stay with me to this day are of the phenomenal reds and golds of the desert at sunset, and the stark acacia trees that thrive there.
